The past year has been a very busy, productive and successful time for
the YLNL. 1999 started with a bang for the Young Liberals with
the Provincial General Election. We were given the opportunity to
understand first hand the world of politics, through exposure to the election,
helping liberal candidates at all levels of the election through door to
door distribution of
posters, solicitation of support and almost any other task that needed
to be carried out during the provincial election.
Also in 1999 the YLNL sent the largest delegation of Young Liberals to the Atlantic Caucus conference in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Young Liberals from Atlantic Canada had the opportunity to take part in policy discussions, debates and policy formulation and meet their counterparts from other provinces.
From October 1-3, 1999 we held our first Youth AGM in ten years separately
from the Senior Party's AGM. It was a huge success with all regions
of Newfoundland and Labrador represented at the conference. It gave
Young Liberals the opportunity to develop friendships with other Young
Liberals from all areas of Newfoundland and Labrador. As well, through
this AGM, Young Liberals had the opportunity to discuss policy and issues
that face youth today with a number of Members of the
House of Assembly and Cabinet Ministers.
The year 2000 promises to be even more eventful and successful for the
YLNL. Already this year Newfoundland and Labrador Young Liberals
attended the Biennial Liberal Convention in Ottawa from March 16-19, 2000.
We also have the added privilege of hosting the Young Liberal Atlantic
Caucus, which will be held from August 4-6, 2000 at Killdevil Camp
in
Newfoundland's beautiful and famous Gros Morne National Park.
Later in the fall of 2000 we are planning to again hold our Young Liberal
Annual General Meeting separately from the senior party's Annual General
Meeting.
As we enter the new millennium, we reflect on our past, and realize
that the Young Liberals of Newfoundland and Labrador are growing stronger
than ever before. Our numbers have continued to grow and with this
increase in membership the YLNL has grown stronger to create a more united
Youth Commission within the Liberal Party of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Because of this increase in size and strength the calibre of the Young
Liberal's policy discussions and debates have grown such as our voice.
The future looks bright for the Young Liberals of Newfoundland and
Labrador.
